Read 52 books
I love to read. I used to spent summers reading as many books as possible. I would list them and tell my parents proudly that I had not only gone to camp or worked, but also read 30+ books. Those days have disappeared. This year I read 35 books, some of which were relatively short plays. I know this a lot more books than a lot of people read, but I want to get back to teenage Charly reading levels. So I've decided to try to read 52 books this year. I am sure many of you have read the numerous quotations that say readers make better writers. You can learn a lot about writing from just reading. I, honestly, think I've learned a lot more about myself from reading.
Even better, I'm going to give back every 5 books I read through Eco-Libris, regardless of whether or not I read the book on my Kindle or in regular paperback/hardcover form. I've already read one book (that is what happens when you are sick in bed on New Year's Day). 51 to go.
Read A Poem A Day
In college, I studied playwriting and poetry. I sometimes forget my love of poetry when trying to write plays and/or novels. In 2009, I read a poem a day (well, almost) for about 6 months while I was in grad school the first time. Reading a poem a day helped me write more poetry as well as gave a little bit of sanity during a topsy-turvy time. I'm pretty sure 2012 will be awesomely topsy-turvy. Every April, I get a poem emailed to me everyday. Honestly, I signed up for it years ago, I don't remember how or why or who, but, luckily, I keep getting them. Every April 1st, I am pleasantly surprised.
So I think it is best to go back to basics. Read a poem a day. I am hoping that will inspire more poetry writing as well.

Above, you'll see above new pages. Poems Read and Books Read. I will post every book and every poem I read, in case you are interested.
Do any of you have book related resolutions? Or writing ones (I have those too, which I'll share later)?

I did 27 books, which might be the lowest I've ever read. But - I added a challenge for myself to blog about each and every book, which slowed down my reading. What are you going to read first?
ReplyDeleteWell, I was all over the place in December and started probably 10 books. So my first step is to finish those...Several biographies, a few on yoga/mindfulness, The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins and the Integrative Nutrition book. I am hoping to read more fiction after this phase since my brain hasn't been able to focus on it lately. Not sure what that is about. Any books you read last year that you'd suggest?
