Today it came to my attention that I know way too much about the Kardashians. I came to this realization when I was explaining to a friend of mine what was happening on reruns of Khloe and Lamar*. I then explained the history of the Kardashians...well as much as I knew...which is way more than I feel comfortable with. I know part of it isn't my fault. There were headlines telling me about Kim's marriage lasting only 72 days. Rob is on Dancing with the Stars and my mom loves that show. Plus, it is not my fault that they were showing reruns of Khloe & Lamar in the nail salon (or that they've had marathons of Khloe and Kourtney Take Miami or Kourtney and Kim Take New York). It also isn't my fault that I had to explain some plot points to my friend and the lady doing my nails.
But I have to admit that I like Khloe Kardashian, mostly because she tells her family members off on a daily basis, and I've DVR'd Khloe & Lamar on numerous occasions. I even admit I follow her on Twitter, but how did this happen? I know I am a fan of TV...and do like a few reality shows (Shout out to Kendra, Sister Wives, & Hoarders!**)...but sometimes I worry that all of this is having an effect on me.
Why do I bring this up? Because there is a character in my NaNoWriMo novel that is named Dash. I named him after Dashiell Hammett, as in the author of The Maltese Falcon. I say that in the novel. In the moment, when I was writing, that is what was going through my head....
but one never knows where true inspiration comes from....
And unfortunately, today I realized that I may have just thought of the name 'Dash' because that is the name of the Kardashians' store.
I chose the name because of Dashiell Hammett, right? I thought about Raymond Chandler (author of The Big Sleep), but Ray didn't have the same ring to it as Dash (no offense to anyone named Ray)***. See, I thought these things through!
Still, I worry, guys. I'm going to go read something very intellectual now.

* Um, can we talk about the picture on the Khloe and Lamar website? Like why is he shirtless? Why are they making me think about all sorts of racial stereotypes with this photo?
**I do watch other tv shows...that aren't reality shows. Mostly they are comedies...except the ones that are about serial killers or crime in general. I'm thinking that maybe I should turn the TV off and do more yoga.
***I really like old detective novels...Or characters portrayed by Humphrey Bogart. I don't know which. (P.S. I really like To Have and Have Not...I may watch that instead of reading something intellectual...)
