The Words You Need to Hear

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

Just a few weeks ago, I started sending my writing back and forth with a few writing buddies. It feels good to once again share my work, the beginnings of my work, with others.

It has been difficult though at the same time.

I am in the middle of any number of projects.

None of which are plays. Ha.

I don't know where any of them are going and honestly, I've been afraid to share them.

We all know that writing, art, isn't perfect when we start it...or when we finish it.

We work, we whittle away at it. We crop, paste, delete, undo it.

We know it is just the beginning, but we are still afraid to share sometimes. Because we may not know where it is going.

I have no idea where my pieces are going and everyday I fight the urge to just throw them away. The other day though I went through my computer and saw dozens of started and unfinished projects. They were thrown to the side.

Mostly because I didn't have writing buddies waiting in the wings to catch them and throw them back at me.

The beauty of writing buddies is that they often tell you the things you need to hear.

And often, the words you need to hear are:

KEEP GOING. KEEP WRITING.

I am not at the point in my life where I can say that mantra and listen to it. I need someone to yell it at me through email or over the phone.

Keep going into the unknown. Let words come down and ideas blossom out.

Good. Bad. Everything in-between.

If you don't have a writing buddy, you can also just watch this. Almost as effective...not quite but almost:

  1. Um, I definitely sing out to myself "just keep swimming, just keep swimming" when I'm at the end of a run exhausted :)
