I have to write a short bio for the play reading. This is yet another thing that makes me feel a little more real. I have 75 words to explain who I am, sorta. It has been a while since I had a write a bio for a theater program. Writing my 'About' page for this blog felt somewhat easy. Also, I think I know most of you who have ventured to the blog. You guys probably haven't even read the 'About' page. Now, I don't know about you, but I definitely read the bios in my theater programs. One, it is a way to waste some time before the show begins. Two, I am always interested in what people have done before, where they are from, etc. Three, I am always interested in making connections between the players. What do I mean? A lot of times those involved in the show share a connection: they went to college together, they were a part of the same theater company, they both did a play at such and such theater. Sometimes the connections aren't so clear, but they are still there. So-and-so worked with So-and-So-2, who worked with So-and-So-3, which is how So-and-So and So-and-So-3 met. I guess the theater world is like, well, life. So, yeah, I like spending time connecting the dots.
I digress.
So I worried about my short bio for the theater program because someone may be like me. They may actually read it. That is a problem. So I started writing it tentatively. Now I have a rough draft.
What is interesting in my current draft is that I haven't written much about other theater related information in my life. Granted, I took time off from the theater so much of it wouldn't really matter anyway, but I still think it is interesting to note that I wrote about working with children instead of my history of being an actor, director, and, most recently, a dramaturg from another playwright. Instead, I wrote about the kids I worked with.
Maybe that isn't the right way to go. I mean, I am not sure there is a right way. Who really gives a crap about my bio anyway? But I have to admit that I like that this current bio, this draft, highlights my love of writing and my love of working with children. It feels more me than listing past theatrical experience. So, we shall see, I suppose. The person in the audience who reads bios like me may be a little disappointed.
